TRAVELING WITH KIDS
8 WAYS TO MAKE HOLIDAY TRAVEL MORE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE

The holidays are a great time to visit friends and family, but traveling with children can often add stress to an already stressful time. Check out these tips and learn easy ways to keep kids happy during long trips.

TIP #1
Take New Toys

Bring a few new toys on the trip, but don't give them out right away. Let your kids know they'll get one in an hour, but only if they behave. Do this every few hours, depending on the length of your journey. Not only does this keep kids entertained, but it also teaches them patience.

TIP #2
Leave Early

Leave early in the morning before your kids wake up. That way they'll sleep through some of the trip, and you can enjoy a few morning hours of peace and quiet. Be sure to bring a blanket and pillows. The more comfortable they are, the more comfortable you'll be.

TIP #3
Take a Break

Take frequent breaks at rest stops and gas stations. Kids need to stretch out and run around on long trips. Bring a Frisbee or a ball and let kids work some of their energy out.

TIP #4
Bring a Portable DVD Player

If you don't already have a portable DVD player, it's a purchase you won't regret. Bring a few of their favorite DVDs and maybe even a couple of new ones if you can.

TIP #5
Play Classic Car Games

There are lots of fun games you can play in the car. Older kids can pass the time with games like travel Monopoly and Scrabble. And for younger kids, try timeless classics like "I Spy" and "20 Questions."

TIP #6
Pack Snacks

Bring a cooler stocked with all of your kids' favorite drinks, snacks and easy-to-eat foods: juice, water bottles, animal crackers, dry cereal, pb&j sandwiches, etc. Keep the cooler in a handy location so you can easily reach in anytime.

TIP #7
Grab a Map

Pick up a map made of laminated paper and let your children navigate during the trip. They'll love to trace the route. And you'll never have to worry about them asking, "Are we there yet?"

TIP #8
Get Crafty

Turn a tedious trip into hours of amusement with some portable art supplies. A simple set that includes crayons, markers and paper is all that is needed to create fridge-worthy works of art.
