Make Stock from Scratch
Your slow cooker not only makes great soup, it’s also perfect for making your own stock. Creating stock from scratch is a simple and economical way to save money and make good use of leftover turkey parts. With a few extra ingredients and a little time upfront, you can add flavor to any meal at a moment’s notice. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- A slow cooker
- 3 to 4 pounds of turkey parts or bones
- 2 onions peeled and quartered
- 2 celery stalks
- 3 chopped carrots
- 6 garlic cloves
- Fresh herbs and spices
- Place all of your ingredients in the slow cooker, cover ingredients with water and simmer.
- Every so often, use a spoon to skim off the foam that rises to the top.
- After approximately 2 to 3 hours, remove your stock from the cooker and strain through a sieve or fine colander.
- Leave the stock to cool and place in the fridge to chill overnight.
- Once chilled, remove the layer of fat that will form on the surface, and your stock is ready for use.
- To keep your stock fresh, pour it into ice cube trays and then freeze it. Now you can easily melt down as many cubes as you need for any one of our savory recipes.
