6 Shady Brook Farms® Traditional Turkey Bratwurst
2 bottles lager-style beer or apple cider
2 bay leaves
1 can (14-1/2 ounce) sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
12 slices pumpernickel rye bread
1 cup Thousand Island dressing
3/4 pound Swiss or Gruyere cheese, grated or thinly sliced
Nonstick vegetable spray

How to prepare this recipe:

  1. Pour beer or apple cider into a deep skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add bratwursts and bay leaves and bring to a simmer. Cover and simmer 15 minutes, until cooked through. To be sure, the internal temperature for the sausages must reach 170° F.
  3. Remove sausages from beer or apple cider and let cool slightly.
  4. Lay out the bread slices in two rows of six each.
  5. Spread all of the bread slices with the Thousand Island dressing, using it all.
  6. Lay 2 bratwurst on top of 6 of the bread slices.
  7. Top the bratwursts with the sauerkraut, dividing it evenly.
  8. Evenly spread the cheese over the sauerkraut.
  9. Close the sandwiches.
  10. Heat a griddle to medium-high heat.
  11. Spray each sandwich with the nonstick spray and fry in the griddle until browned on one side. Turn over and fry until browned and the cheese is melted. Repeat with remaining sandwiches until they have all browned.
  12. Cut in half and serve warm.
